Erich will be making a presentation on using Mule Source May 19th at 5:30 for this month's AITP Meeting. The meeting will be held at the Fairlawn-Bath branch of the Akron Public Library. Mule Source is the leading OpenSource implementation of an Enterprise Service Bus (ESB). What that means to non-techies (like me) is that this tool will allow applications that are not alike to share information. How this helps businesses is that by using this type of tool, they can link applications (investments) together to extend the life of the applications and to streamline business processes. An example is that if you have a resource currently entering information from one system to another, this process can be automated. Thus freeing up that resource to provide other valuable services to your organization. The use of this type of technology is especially useful in an economy where we are all hunkering down and watching what we spend, but still want to add efficiencies and compete on a higher level. You will be poised and ready to handle new volumes of business because applications can be linked internally and externally while they can remain independent of each other. Please join us on the 19th from 5:30 to 8:30 at 3101 Smith Road, Akron, OH, 44333. The cost is free. Reservations are not required, but are appreciated. |

Not too long ago, we were able to help one of our customers with their order acknowledgment process. They were receiving orders via email, putting that information into one of their systems, running a batch file process at night, then going through some internal processing before they could finally generate an acknowledgment back to their customer. Phew! This was taking between 24 and 48 hours.
In very simple terms (because that's the way I think), we installed an interface (enterprise service bus) to pull details from the email directly and generate an acknowledgment in 7 seconds. We like to share this example as one of our success stories. It's pretty easy to understand what we did, and very easy to see how it impacted our customer's business. The company did not eliminate a position because of this change, but it does allow some very key people in their organization to spend their time doing more value-added activities instead of re-entering data from one system to another. We wouldn't say that what we do is rocket science, but we do help our customers discover little changes that can be made to a business process that can have a big impact. |

Last week, Erich attended the Cleveland Java Users Group Meeting in Independence. Last night, he attended the MySQL Users Group Meeting. He enjoyed both meetings immensely. He even shared some new developments in the MySQL world with Dan and I this afternoon regarding partitioning. This may come in handy for some of the web apps we've developed. I'm going to post links to both User Groups websites for future reference. |

At evosolutions, our "products" are solutions. This morning, we were meeting to review the status of a web application that we are re-writing from PHP to a JAVA platform. Not only do we want to stabilize the application with JAVA because it's becoming a little monster of an app, but we are adding enhancements to make it more user-friendly for our customer to manage and we'd like to remarket it as a stand alone product.
During our meeting, one of the inner workings of the application we were discussing I thought was so cool, and currently functioning, that I thought it was something that needed to be shared with the world (or whoever is reading my blog).
Part of the new application is a common interface that can service payment processing with several merchant gateways from multiple clients or applications. What does this mean to the average Joe (or Jane)? Well, no matter how many merchant gateways (i.e. PayPal or Authorize.net) a proprieter uses, the transaction format on the client side is the same. This integration allows the proprietors to easily switch out payment gateways at any time by simply referencing the new account.
That's one thing that I think makes what we do so cool for businesses who need to adapt to the changing market place and conditions. This tool gives them flexibility, their clients flexibility. It's a good thing - like the little nougaty center of a great piece of candy. Very fitting for Valentine's Day! (look how I tied that together! Impressive!) |

Civic Innovation Fund Party |

Thursday, October 16th, we had the pleasure of attending the Cleveland Civic Innovation Fund Party. The event was to commemorate the past recipients of the award. We were invited by our friends at Fresh Fork. They have a very cool business that connects local restaurants with growers of food. The event was held at Ray's Indoor Mountain Bike Park. Not only was there food and drink, but bikers riding around the multi-story park. |
